Anchor charts
What is an anchor chart?
An anchor chart is a tool used to support instruction in the classroom and to provide a scaffold during guided and independent practice. It can also serve as a classroom management tool as students self-monitor their behavior by behind reminded of expectations or rules. The chart is made along side the lesson of instruction and then displayed in the classroom as needed or all the time.
Anchor Charts in Science
Anchor charts can be used in any subject. I think using them for science is just like any other subject specifically the discovery and visual aspect of science can directly be shown on a chart. Both the teacher and student take role in contributing the creation of the chart which keeps the students engaged in creating the visual. Science has a lot of specific processes like the scientific method, the act of discovery, cycles of life and animals which are all a perfect topic visually and academically for an anchor chart." The focus should not be on displaying cute teacher-created visuals on the wall, but rather the proper acquisition and organization of student-generated content."
Will I use anchor charts?
I personally love the idea of student/teacher made anchor charts. I think a major part is allowing the student to collaborate while making the poster. It should be student created. Not just a teacher made poster for looks. It needs to scaffold what the students are currently learning. Being able to have these displayed in the classroom is a great way to look back on things previously learned. Again, if the student creates the chart it's easier for them to learn from. “Anchor charts provide a record of our
instruction. Anchor charts make both the teacher’s and the students’ thinking
visible and concrete” Sources:
